Making a Halloween Layer Cake

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to bake a cake in celebration of the favorite holiday. They’re great centerpieces for any fall holiday table!  You can decorate this simple cake as you wish with supplies from our online cake supply store.

Directions:
1. Cream butter and sugar in a bowl until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well after each. Combine flour, baking powder, salt, and milk.

  1. In a separate bowl, combine the cocoa, water and vanilla. Stir in 2 cups of cake batter.
  2. Pour into a greased and floured round baking pan (8 inches is recommended).
  3. Add the orange extract, peel and food coloring to the remaining batter. Pour into two round baking pans (also greased and floured).
  4. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, and let cool for 10 minutes.
  5. Beat all frosting ingredients until smooth.
  6. Place one layer of orange cake on a cake plate, and spread with ½ cup of frosting. Top with the chocolate layer, and repeat. Top with second orange layer, and frost the sides and top.Ingredients:

    2 cups sugar
    4 eggs
    3 cups all-purpose flour
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup milk
    1/4 cup baking cocoa
    1/4 cup water
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/2 teaspoon orange extract
    1 tablespoon grated orange peel
    10 drops yellow food coloring
    6 drops red food coloring

Frosting Ingredients:
3 packages (3 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
5-3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar
2 tablespoons milk
8 drops yellow food coloring
6 drops red food coloring
